Stave Hill Ecological Park - A Selected Archive

Materials assembled as part of '30 Years of Urban Ecology at Stave Hill in Docklands', a research and public engagement project by soundCamp, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The collection includes documents relating to the Trust for Urban Ecology (TRUE).

Stave Hill Ecological Park was set up in Rotherhithe, S London in 1986 as the successor to the William Curtis Ecology Park, a temporary project by TRUE at Tower Bridge which was the UK's and perhaps the world's first urban ecology park. Stave Hill is currently managed by the Trust for Conservation Volunteers (TCV).

SoundCamp are an artists collective based in London.

As part of the  project '30 Years of Urban Ecology at Stave Hill in Docklands', the artists' collective: soundCamp conducted a series of micro residencies to explore and document the site through the seasons. As part of the Spring residency, photographer Ky Lewis made series of images using camera-less (cyanotype, anthotype, lumen) processes and pinhole cameras. This series covers plants found on the site from 4 to 10 April 2016. '30 Years of Urban Ecology at Stave Hill in Docklands' was...

The Trust for Urban Ecology included graphic artists from the outset in 1976, when the William Curtis Ecological Park was created on a disused lorry park by Tower Bridge. The name of the Park itself references the pioneering work Flora Londinensis (1777) by William Curtis, who commissioned leading artists to document London's indigenous flora in colour plates, partly with a view to assisting identification and recording by non specialists. Original artwork was a feature of the Trust's...

Five photographs by Rebeka Clark show the laying out of Stave Hill Ecological Park on the Rotherhithe Peninsula in South London and the sites development in the first years, up to around 1992. The final pinhole photograph by Ky Lewis from 2 May 2015 shows the same view, now with semi mature woodland. The Thames runs in the valley behind the trees, in front of the new financial district.
